Healing goji spice latte

Who loves lattes? How about goji berries? Who still gets confused, yet delighted, about the flavour bomb that is a goji berry every time you pop one in your mouth?

If you answered, “Me,” to any and/or hopefully all of the above, hop on board the goji latte train.

I know it might sound weird, but lattes come in pretty much every flavour and colour these days. The buck doesn’t stop at coffee or even matcha. I used to think turmeric lattes were pretty crazy, but the latest menu I saw included beet and blue spirulina lattes, too.

Here’s how the latte world works now:

Frothy milk + chosen superfood = comforting good-for-you beverage

Today’s superfood of choice: goji berries for the win!

Beyond the unique taste of the goji berry, it has plenty of benefits. It has been used in Chinese medicine for 2,000+ years and legend has it that monks used it for energy and vitality. While I can’t speak to whether or not the endless health claims about goji berries are true, I love the idea of a morning latte that gives you a little energy without any caffeine. I do find that it perks me up, but maybe it’s just the power of positive thought and a jolt of flavour.

When you get down the the nutritional qualities of goji berries, they are still pretty awesome. They are packed with antioxidants, 18 different amino acids (including all of the essential ones), Vitamins A and C, and selenium. Goji berries can do you a lot of good, while being super-tasty at the same time.

I love a using creamy coconut milk in here, and I think dates pair really well with this recipe, but feel free to pick any milk you like and, if you don’t have any dates handy, a spoonful of raw honey is pretty nice instead. Share with someone you love on a lazy Sunday morning for maximum luxury.

If this goji latte is giving you all the good feels, comment below to let me know . I have a hot chocolate recipe with gojis and a handful of other latte-slash-elixirs in my back pocket I would be happy to share in the future 🧡

Servings: 2

Ingredients

⅓ cup goji berries

2½ cups milk of choice

4 small dates

¼ tsp dried ginger or 1 cm fresh

¼ tsp dried turmeric or 1 cm fresh

½ tsp cinnamon plus more for garnish

⅛ tsp nutmeg

Pinch black pepper

Pinch pink salt

1 Tb collagen optional

Instructions

  1. Bring all ingredients except collagen to a boil, then simmer for 5 minutes.

  2. Remove from heat and add collagen.

  3. In a high speed blender, blitz with either the middle part of the cover removed or leave a crack between the container and the top for steam to escape. Start at low speed and move up to medium (or medium-high) to ensure no splashes. It will take about a minute to get everything smooth and the top should get nice and frothy.

  4. Optional: Strain through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth; the goji seeds often stay whole.

  5. Top with more cinnamon and serve.
